Mimar Koca Sinan sur les ordres de Mehmed, un ancien esclave (
janissaire) de Višegrad devenu vizir.

The bridge named Mehmed Paša Sokolović, completed in 1571 has been built by the architect Mimar Koca Sinan following the order of Mehmed, a former slave (janissary) native of Višegrad who became a vizier.

IvoAndrić (1892-1975) est un Serbe de Bosnie. Il vécu une partie de son enfance à Višegrad. Après avoir été diplomate, il se consacra pleinement à l’écriture dès la fin de la deuxième guerre mondiale et s'installa définitivement à Belgrade.

Andrić reçut le prix Nobel de Littérature en 1961 "« pour la force épique avec laquelle il traçait des thèmes
et représentait des destinées humaines tirées de l'histoire de son pays ».
IvoAndrić, a Bosnian Serb who spent part of his childhood in Višegrad. He was a diplomat before the Second World War and then a writer at full time in Belgrade.
Ivo Andrić received the Nobel prize in literature in 1961 "for

drawn from the history of his country."
Dans son livre "Le pont sur la Drina", publié en 1945 Ivo Andrić décrit la cohabitation entre musulmans, chrétiens orthodoxes, juifs, tziganes... dans Visegrad, ottomane puis autrichienne. Quatre siècles d’histoires qui se succèdent avec comme lien
commun ce fameux pont sous lequel coule la rivière Drina, frontière naturelle
entre la Bosnie et la Serbie à l'époque. Destins particuliers et légendes entre l'Orient et l'Occident, je ne peux que vous recommander ce roman qui n'en est pas qu'un.
Ivo Andrić in his book "The bridge over the Drina" describes the lives of Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, gypsies... living together in Visegrad first an Ottoman town then an Austrian one. He is telling stories spanning four centuries with the bridge as a common bond. This famous bridge under which the Drina flows as a natural border between Bosnia and Serbia at the time of the book. Legends and personal destinies between Orient and Occident.
I can only recommend you to read this novel which is not only a novel.
Tout le monde se rencontre sur ce pont, chacun s’asseoit sur la Kapia, une petite terrasse au centre du pont, un lieu de rencontres et parfois d’affrontements.
Everyone meets on the bridge, there is a place for everyone to sit on the kapia which is like a small terasse in the middle of the bridge, a place for meetings as well as for confrontations.

Il y avait toujours eu et il y aurait toujours des nuits étoilées au-dessus de la ville, et des constellations somptueuses, et des clairs de lune, mais il n'y avait jamais eu et Dieu sait s'il y aurait encore un jour des jeunes gens comme ceux-là, veillant sur la kapia à discuter de la sorte, à brasser de telles idées et de tels sentiments. Ce fut une génération d'anges révoltés, dans ce laps de temps très bref où ils ont encore toute puissance, tous les droits des anges mais aussi l'ardente fierté des rebelles."...
..."The first summer days of 1913... There had been and there would be again starlight nights on the kapia and rich constellations and moonlight, but there had never been, and God alone knows whether there would be again, such young men who in such conversations and with such feelings and ideas would keep vigil on the kapia. That was a generation of rebel angels, in that short moment while they still had all the power and all the rights of angels and also the flaming pride of rebels."...

A Turkish inscription paying homage to Mehmed Paša Sokolović (sorry no translation for the text which says that Mehmed constructed this bridge following the will of God, that his ancestors had never been able to build such a bridge.
On passe malheureusement sous silence toutes les horreurs de
la guerre des années 90 qui ont fait beaucoup de victimes, Višegrad a payé un
très lourd tribut. J’ai été surprise par l’absence de monument quel qu’il soit
mais il en est de même ailleurs dans l’ancienne Yougoslavie et les vérités
n’ont jamais été mises à jour.
Unfortunately there is no word about the horrors for the 1990's war which have claimed so many victims. Višegrad has paid a very hard price. I was surprised not to see any memorial but it is the same silence in all the ex-Yougoslavia and truths have never been updated.
